New Median at Laurel Canyon and Webb Avenue
For years, local residents have seen the concrete median that existed at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Webb Avenue as an eyesore. After the Bureau of Street Services drafted a plan to enhance the median, Sun Valley Beautiful stepped in to implement the plan and secured a grant from the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative to assist with the beautification of the corner.
The existing concrete was demolished and removed thanks to the help of Tony Servera Company, Vulcan Materials and Pena Trucking. Then the area was prepped for landscaping and volunteers from Neenach Neighborhood Watch, Stonehurst and Shadow Hills neighborhoods and Virginia’s co-madres helped plant jacaranda and purple plum trees. Food and water donations from the local Chuck E. Cheese, CVS, Domino’s Pizza, Food 4 Less, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Ralph’s Supermarket ensured that everyone was well-fed throughout the process.
Today, the intersection is an area that everyone can proudly look upon!
Olinda Avenue Pedestrian Bridge
After a local police officer pointed out that more people would use the Olinda Avenue pedestrian bridge if it was cleaned up and residents felt safer about crossing it to get to the Sun Valley Metrolink Station, Sun Valley Beautiful solicited support from the community, including a $500 grant from the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative as well as a matching grant from Home Depot for paint and equipment, to clean up the area.
All of the graffiti has been removed from the area and new plants have been added. The Sun Valley Graffiti Busters will continue to maintain the area and neighbors and the LA Police Department will continue to monitor the bridge to ensure it stays clean and safe for all residents. Thanks to everyone who pitched in – it’s truly been a team effort!
