Press Releases
ALMOST TWO YEARS LATER, COMMITMENT SHOWS
Recent Fundraising Effort Demonstrates a Change in Attitude
Sun Valley, September 30, 2005 –
In November of 2003, the San Fernando Valley Business Journal published a story (Sun Valley Businesses Mount PR Push to Boost their Image, November 24, 2003) in which Sun Valley businesses promised a renewed commitment to improving the quality of life in Sun Valley. Now, almost two years later, it is clear that Sun Valley business leaders have kept their promises, and have put their efforts behind fundraising, community efforts and Los Angeles City leadership to help get things done.
In the Spring of 2004, leaders joined to form Sun Valley Beautiful, an initiative of the Sun Valley Chamber of Commerce, with a mission to focus attention on the environment and public health. In a sign of Sun Valley Beautiful’s ability to channel local resources, when the group decided to install a welcome sign and improve a median, it took two weeks to raise the needed $10,000. Four of the area’s largest businesses; Waste Management, Vulcan Materials, Sun Valley Paper Stock, Industrial Metal Supply Company as well as the Rotary Club of Sun Valley each committed $1000, and local business owner Arthur Sweet, President of A&E Development Co. Inc. came through with a matching grant of $5000.
This is only the latest successful improvement effort. Sun Valley Beautiful has also:
- Run two Earth Day Expos, each attracting over 1000 visitors
- Sponsored a forum featuring City Councilperson Tony Cardenas in a discussion of local environmental Justice
- Supported Councilmember Cardenas’ successful efforts to secure $100,000 for air monitoring in Sun Valley
In addition SVB member Waste Management has also sponsored other beautification efforts, by offering and supporting two rounds of Neat Neighborhood grants. The two dozen neighborhood beautification grants of $1000 each went to local clean-up projects including graffiti clean-up, landscaping, tree planting, and litter removal efforts. Waste Management will offer more such grants in the spring of 2006.
Says Jim Dean, Chair of Sun Valley Beautiful, “The health of Sun Valley is important to us, both professionally and personally. We will continue to do what we can to improve the environment and the aesthetics of our city, because it is our home.”
Future Sun Valley Beautiful activities will include continued median development projects, tree planting, and community environmental education efforts.
