Sun Valley Beautiful Supports Cardenas Motion to Secure $100,000 for Air Monitoring in Sun Valley

Sun Valley, May 13, 2004 – In an effort to help improve air quality in the San Fernando Valley, Sun Valley Beautiful today announced its support of Councilman Tony Cardenas’ motion to secure $100,000 for air monitoring in Sun Valley. The motion directs the Environmental Affairs Department to apply for the $100,000 through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Air Toxics Community-Based Program.

“The quality of our air is vital to the health of the residents of Sun Valley,” said Mary Lou Steinfeld, President, Sun Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. “Through the support of this motion, we are taking an active role in the effort to improve air quality for our community. Sun Valley Beautiful is proud to support Councilman Cardenas’ efforts to improve the area’s air quality monitoring systems, Steinfeld added.”

The funding, if awarded to the City’s Environmental Affairs Department, will be used to improve air-monitoring and pollution prevention efforts within a two-mile radius near Byrd Middle School and Fernangeles Elementary School. The project will also help develop residents' skills to understand environmental impacts on their health, and learn how to effectively deal with local, state, and federal agencies in that process. Finally, the grant would help identify major pollutant sources in Sun Valley and help reduce or eliminate these sources.

The National Air Toxics Community-Based Program is part of an EPA grant program designed to assist state and local communities in characterizing and reducing their local air toxics problems and to track their air toxics reduction activities. The EPA is offering up to $600,000 in competitive grants resulting in 6-10 cooperative agreements ranging in value from $60,000 to $100,000.
