Sun Valley Beautiful Helps Create a “New Day” in Sun Valley
First “Earth Day Expo” Helps Sun Valley Kids and Environment Win
Sun Valley, April 22, 2004 –
More than a thousand local residents and 25+ exhibitors took part in Sun Valley’s first-ever Earth Day Expo on Saturday, April 17 at Sun Valley Park. Sun Valley Beautiful, which is an initiative of the Sun Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and many local companies and employers, co-sponsored the event along with Los Angeles Councilmember Tony Cardenas (C.D. 6). The Expo focused attention on the environment, recycling and other earth-friendly programs to help Sun Valley residents increase their environmental consciousness. Music, food and other entertainment rounded out the day’s activities.
The highlight of the Expo’s activities was the awarding of more than $1,000 in cash prizes to ten different student winners of the event’s Essay and Poster Contest. The children were aged 6-14 and worked creatively on their essays and posters in response to the theme of “How I Make Sun Valley Beautiful.” (The attached photograph pictures Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas and Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez, the winning students, and sponsors of the Essay and Poster Contest: Waste Management, Vulcan Materials Company, Industrial Metals Supply and Crown Disposal.)
Sun Valley Beautiful focuses attention on three areas: environmental beautification, public health enhancement, and education and public information. Sun Valley Beautiful seeks to create partnerships and collaboration between business, community and civic groups. The initiative resulted from ongoing efforts of a cross-section of companies that drive employment and economic activity in Sun Valley and the northeast San Fernando Valley. This year’s Earth Day Expo was the first major undertaking of Sun Valley Beautiful and planning has already begun on future projects as well as next year’s Earth Day Expo.
“We have been actively searching for ways to promote environmentalism and support the communities we serve,” said Mary Lou Steinfeld, President, Sun Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. “Sun Valley Beautiful serves as an opportunity for those of us who live and work in Sun Valley to renew our commitment to the health of our community, and to shine a positive light on the many positive developments taking place,” Steinfeld added.
City of Los Angeles Councilman Tony Cardenas, CD 6, praised the group’s leadership, stating, “I’m happy to see companies that have operated in Sun Valley for many years begin to listen to and work with the community. I’m looking forward to other companies and community organizations joining Sun Valley Beautiful.” Cardenas added, “Jobs, taxes, environmental innovation and clean-up, and partnership with the community are keys to ensuring Sun Valley’s ongoing vitality for decades to come.”
“Sun Valley Beautiful is a solutions-oriented partnership that will help our community work together in new ways to improve our quality of life,” said Doug Corcoran, director of operations for Waste Management. “Tangible environmental and public health improvements, as well as an improved image of our community will result from our positive approach,” Corcoran added.
"Vulcan Materials welcomes the opportunity to partner with Sun Valley Beautiful and the community to fulfill the common goal of increasing environmental stewardship,” said Todd Spitler, Community Outreach Manager for Vulcan Materials Company.
