Earth Day Celebration Brings Out Local Residents
Messages of Environmental Responsibility and Folklorico Music Fill the Air
Sun Valley, April 16, 2005 –
The second annual Sun Valley Earth Day Festival and Expo sponsored by Sun Valley Beautiful was expected to attract 1500 people today to the Sun Valley Recreation Center. Residents enjoyed entertainment, food, and activities all designed to celebrate “Mother Earth” and bring a greater sense of environmental awareness to the community.
“The Earth Day Festival and Expo serves as the perfect opportunity for those of us who live and work in Sun Valley to renew our commitment to the health of our neighborhood, and to shine a positive light on the many wonderful developments taking place,” said Lily Lee, President, Sun Valley Area Chamber of Commerce.
The special day was scheduled to kick off with a flag presentation by the Poly Color Guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Councilmember Cardenas. Maria Sanchez sang the National Anthem. Student Folklorico groups from Fernangeles, Roscoe and Vinedale Elementary Schools performed as did non-profit Mariachi group, Mariachi Oro Angelinos.
Residents toured over 20 booths promoting health, education and environmental awareness. Health screenings were provided for free and residents were able to meet Captain Grease, who reminded them not to pour motor oil down the drain. Sun Valley Recreation Center staff led gymnastics and karate demonstration modules and discussed their entire syllabus of healthy choice classes for young and old.
