COUNCILMAN TONY CARDENAS & SUN VALLEY BEAUTIFUL CELBRATE EARTH DAY 2009
Sun Valley, April 10, 2009 – Councilman Tony Cardenas and Sun Valley Beautiful invite local residents, businesses, their employees and families to the Sun Valley Earth Day Fair on April 18 at the Sun Valley Recreation Center (located at 8133 Vineland Avenue in Sun Valley). Organized by Sun Valley Beautiful and the Sun Valley Chamber of Commerce, the event is free to the public.
Sun Valley residents and business owners will enjoy live music, free food, and educational activities to celebrate environmental responsibility in the community. Earth Day 2009 will highlight the good works of ordinary people who are engaged in individual and collective activities to improve their health, to improve their schools, to participate in building a solution to urgent national and global issues, such as climate change or the world’s water crises. With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Sun Valley will once again celebrate Earth Day 2009 as a day of action and civic participation.
As part of the activities, there will be work projects at three different locations from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.
- Laurel Canyon Blvd./Webb Avenue — the Neenach Neighborhood Watch continues its beautification work to green the traffic median; they will move back the mulch to make space for a river rock border and clean up the surrounding area.
- Olinda Pedestrian Bridge between Bradley Avenue and Sun Valley Metrolink Station — Sun Valley
Graffiti Busters will paint out graffiti and remove debris for a safer environment.
- Vineland Avenue between Strathern and San Fernando — TreePeople and Sun Valley Middle School
Leadership students will pull weeds and water the jacarandas planted by LANI five years ago.
The day’s events are made possible with the cooperation and support from: Tony Cárdenas, Class Parks of the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council, People-in-Progress, Industrial Metal Supply, Wendy Greuel, Zev Yaroslavsky, Felipe Fuentes, Waste Management, Vulcan, Trammell Crow, Two Bears Travel, Sun Valley Recreation Center, Sun Valley Paper, Sun Valley Graffiti Busters, TreePeople, Hollywood Beautification Team and Mission Valley Sanitation. Teachers and principals of Sun Valley’s schools were instrumental in encouraging their students to participate in the essay and poster contests.
