Councilmembers Cardenas Empowers Local Residents to Fight for Environmental Justice
Sun Valley, April 7, 2005 –
In an impassioned conversation on Wednesday night, Los Angeles City Councilmember Tony Cardenas and Sun Valley residents discussed the Sun Valley Environmental Justice Improvement Zone. Cardenas' speech and the subsequent discussion period focused on steps residents could take on their own behalf to protect the community from environmental pollution.
Cardenas also provided information on increased violation enforcement in the area and announced an air quality monitoring project that recently secured funding.
The event, sponsored by The Sun Valley Chamber of Commerce and Sun Valley Beautiful, was held at Industrial Metal Supply. Turnout was sizeable and community members were grateful for the chance to get updates and political expertise from Cardenas, who had introduced the motion that created Sun Valley's Environmental Justice Improvement Zone in 2003. The Environmental Justice Improvement Zone initiative calls on the city to recognize and study the concerns of Sun Valley residents.
